Happy Thoughts
Since gaining my freedom, I haven't been up to a whole lot. I started and finished a book (which will get it's own post). I cleaned my house. I caught up on my shows.I made a cheesecake.
And now? I'm eating said cheesecake, watching Gilmore Girls reruns, and curled up in my favourite fluffy blanket. Life is good.

Autumn and Lists
I suppose with Labour Day nearly over, that means that fall is upon us. I am struggling to say goodbye to summer, so in an effort to get excited about the changing of the seasons, here is a list of happy autumn things:
1. I can start to wear all my sweaters again.
2. I can wear my scarves, too.
3. Apple cider
4. Tights and leg warmers.
5. Boots. I finally bought a pair of boots and I'm very excited to wear them.
6. Anything knitted.
7. Fluffly blankets
8. The return of all my favourite TV shows.
And now, here's a list of all the things I've been loving lately:
1. Owls. I know they're in vogue right now, but they are so adorable.
2. Elephants.
3. Penguins. Okay, so I've always loved them.
4. 1940s anything. It's my new favourite decade. I also still love the 60's, don't worry.
5. Lists. I've always loved those too.
6. Finding recipes. I'm addicted.
Also, I love the husband. Furthermore, I'm not calling him "hubby". Blech. Nor "hubs".

I went home last weekend for an impromptu spring break, and to see my brother one last time before he left on his mission. That was sad and wonderful at the same time. He's awesome. And I'm going to miss him. That's really all I have to say for today.
The Ring
Look guys! My first diamond!
The ring is a design by Hugo Kohl. He collects vintage rings, then makes copies of them. Awesome, no? The diamond came from his great-grandmother's wedding ring. It's beautiful and I LOVES it! It's the perfect ring for me.
The pictures aren't very good. That's my bad.
The Proposal
Alright friends, as promised, here is my very own proposal story. Be warned, it's long.
Really, it all began a few weeks ago, when we went to Luke's house for the weekend. While we were there I spotted his skateboard, and thought that learning how to board would be a fun date idea. So we brought it back with us.
A few days later, we talked about how to celebrate Valentine's Day. Last year we did kind of a traditional thing, so this year I wanted to do something a little different. So I suggested we go skateboarding. And then maybe see a movie and get some dinner. He thought that sounded like a great idea. So it was planned.
Monday (V-Day) comes around, and since he and I are both in school, we had to get that out of the way. He comes and picks me up around 4, and I'm still deciding what to wear. I don't want to look like a loser in front of the skate park kids. So I find something and we take off. Luke did some research on where the closest skate park was. Turns out it's in Sandy, which is a good 20 minutes up the freeway. We take off. And we talk and laugh the whole time. And he tells me he's planned a little picnic, which makes me happy. We only got lost once trying to find it. When we get there, there are people everywhere. And shy little me doesn't want to be watched as I learn how to do this. So we head off down the sidewalk.
Just so we're all clear, I suck at skateboarding. Luke was so patient with me. But I'm horrible. He was good at it, though. So after some practise, he went and tried a few tricks in the park. And he did really well. Once he'd had enough we headed off for the picnic. Which he tells me is going to be at the Oquirr Mountain Temple. Now up until this point, I figured it was just another Valentine's. But say 'picnic' and 'temple', and you can't help but figure that something's coming. I didn't say anything though, in case that wasn't what he had planned.
We got lost trying to find it, but we got there eventually. We get out of the car, and he pulls out two bottles of Sobe (our favourite drink) and two cupcake boxes from my favourite cupcake place. We go and find a place to have our picnic. The rest went something like this:
Luke: "Here, this box is yours"
Ashleigh: "Okay" *what if I really wanted the other one?*
I open the box. There's a cupcake, and a little black velvet box.
A: "There's a box in my box."
L: "Yeah"
A: "Can I open it?"
L: "Yeah"
I open the second box. Inside is a beautiful sparkly ring.
L: "Will you marry me?"
A: "Yes!"
And I didn't even cry! Okay, maybe I cried a little. We sat there for a while, and I stared at my hand. Then ducks flew overhead, so it was pretty much the perfect moment. Eventually it got too cold and to dark to keep staring at my ring, so we went and got back in the car, and went out for pizza.
It was the perfect day, the perfect proposal, and the perfect man. I'm so happy.
P.S. That red velvet cupcake with chocolate frosting was the most delicious cupcake ever.

The Announcement
So here it is. Ready?
I'M ENGAGED!!
I'm going to save the engagement story and ring photos for another post when I'm not so tired. But here's the facts:
- it happened Monday night
- I wasn't expecting it at all
- cupcakes were involved
- I'm incredibly happy
Also, I'm sure some of you are going to want to know details about the planning stage, because let's face it, it's fun (and stressful....). So I'll be posting about wedding stuff. But not all the time.
Did I mention I'm really happy? Because I am.
A Simple Thank You
Thank you, Martin Luther King Jr., for being brave and standing up for what you knew to be right. Thank you for believing in your cause so much you were willing to die for it. May you continue to inspire us all to advocate for change.
Fresh Out of Titles
So, I didn't really want to post today. Because then there would be a different post than the last one I posted (with the really awesome poster of The Beatles). I just love how it looks there, with my London background in the.....background....um, hehe...
In other news, the semester is almost over. Yay! Yay? I'm not sure which. It has been a really great semester. I'll be sad to see it go. I've loved my writing class the most. Even though it was TONS of work (sometimes busywork....shhhh). But I got to work with some really fantastic people, and write some fairly fantastic stuff. I know that next semester I get to move on to bigger and better things. But I'm sad to see that class go. I'm also sad to say goodbye to my Monte Python class. Yep, I spent a semester watching silly British men do sillier British things. Be jealous of my major. Finally, I'll be sad to see my extra long weekends go. I've had no Monday or Friday classes, which has been wonderful. Next semester I still have Fridays off, so it's not so bad. And only writing on Mondays, so that's all good.
That was a long paragraph, sorry friends.
Now that the end is near, I have SO MUCH to get done still. It makes me scared just thinking about it. But, it has to get done, right? So I'll just have to stay up late every night getting it done.
I went to the Apple store yesterday (I was on a date :). And they played Beatles music the whole time. I am in love. In fact, I began to wander just so I could stay and listen. Luke is the best for putting up with me.
The rest of the date was good too. We walked around down-town SLC and found a new restaurant to try. Five Star Restaurant should seriously rename themselves. It had Chinese and Thai cuisine. Honestly, the Chinese place at Smith's is so much better. Next, we walked around Temple Square and saw the lights. It was cold, but I loved it. Finally, we went to the mall in search of warm hats. I didn't find any. Neither did Luke. Darn. We still had a great time. Luke's pretty awesome.

Lest We Forget
In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
-------------------------------------
Oh! You who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.
We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valour led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.
And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honour of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wroght
In Flanders Fields.
You Know You're in the Right Major When...
... you cry during lecture because everything that you're talking about is amazing and the people around have the most beautiful insights.
...you stay up late reading, and it's the homework assignment.
...you look forward to doing homework.
...you can't "just" watch a movie.
...you cry during movies, not because they're sad, but because you see the beauty in the dialogue, the cinematography, and the acting.
...you have a crush on a director's style, not an actor.
...you get chills watching movie trailers.

Gratitude
Dear Friend,
You put me on your list of awesome blogs. I'm up there with the girl who writes the rockstar diaries, who is very cute, and I wish I could be her.
Thank you.
I was beginning to wonder if anyone ever read this madness I call a blog.
Love,
Ash

Just for the Record,
I have major life plans. Big, important plans. Plans that involve winning an Oscar before I'm thirty, and making a living by my pen.
If you don't think I can accomplish all I set out to do, you have another thing coming.
If you have a better suggestion for my life, I don't want to hear it.
If you're going to exude negativity on my plans, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to cut you out of my life.
I know what I'm doing.
And I love it.
P.S. I love you, madre.

With a Little Help from my Friends...
Ringo, George, Paul and John, that is.
I need to say this. And this is the way I'm going to do it. Because The Beatles have a song for everything.
This is for you, by the way.
